How Parents (And Anyone) Can Be a Solution in an America That Thrives on Problems

What if we talk to our children about our imperfect world instead of sanitizing and shielding it from them?

What if instead of eradicating every single thing that has racist implications, e.g., books, cartoon characters, product images, and symbols and statues of bygone eras, we use these things as teaching points for our children ~ who are being thrust into a world where the mindsets of yesteryear continue to linger?

What if we take intentional steps with our families to learn about the history of the towns in which we live/have lived? What if our children know the good, bad and ugly of these places?

What if when we see things like the Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd videos, we don’t merely share our opinions in a social media forum, but also dialogue with our children about them?

What if instead of using all of our PTO to take our children to theme parks and beaches, we use some of it to take them to museums and memorials? What if instead of taking them to Disney or Cancun, we take them to the National Civil Rights Museum or the National Museum of the American Indian?

What if we read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with our children, stopping periodically to explain that the word nigger and the other…
